While sash windows have several built-in draught-proofing design features, these can loose their effectiveness over the years. We offer full draght-proofing solutions in parallel to any repair or restoration work carried out, saving resources on energy expenditure.
We offer integrated double glazing solutions for wooden sash windows using the latest developments in highly efficient low ‘U’ value double glazing units.
We also cater for specialist double glazing of heritage sash windows in conservation areas, where the new double glazed sash frames are for all intents and purposes identical to the existing frames.
Over the years the putty holding the glass into the frame may pull away allowing water to get inside the woodwork of the frame. Eventually this could result in the lower part of the frame rotting from the inside with the problem only being discovered and visible once the whole section is rotted through and requiring replacement.
If any of the wood around the window does become rotten it can be removed, the damage around the area stabilised and repairs made by splicing in new wood. We can also replace entire sections such as a sill or bottom rail.
From repairing broken sash cords to addressing issues with sash weights and pulleys, our skilled craftsmen possess the knowledge and expertise to diagnose and resolve any problem with your sash windows. We utilise traditional techniques and high-quality materials to ensure lasting repairs that preserve the integrity of your windows.
Often overlooked but the single most important element of window maintenance is repainting them. Not only do the sills and frame look great but they are also protected for usually about five to seven years. This is when they should be repainted or whenever there have been any repairs.
A true counterbalance weight should each weight half of the weight of the sash frame they are counterbalancing. If this is the case then the window will slide up and down with a minimum of fuss. If the glass has been replaced with a modern replacement then it may be thicker than the original causing the frame to become heavier. This means more weight needs to be added to the counterbalance to function properly.
Some sash windows also rely on a system of counterbalance springs instead of weights and they can wear out and require replacing. We are experts in this area of work too.
Properly weighted sash windows should be able to slide up and down easily with little effort to open and close them. When houses are redecorated sometimes paint will get in between the sash frame and exterior box frame, which could result in the window becoming stuck and harder to operate. We can free up sealed windows again.
